I am by no means an expert sewist. I purchased and downloaded this pdf pattern and instantly loved it. The instructions were clear and simple. After sewing the first clutch, I was unhappy with the final product and couldn't understand why the completed clutch just didn't look right. I was determined to "get it right," so I posted a pic of the completed clutch on Facebook and told my friends the story. I wanted to perfect the sewing of this project. I had tons of fabric scraps. I was willing to sew a clutch for any FB friends who wanted one as a gift from me.
Some friends intend to use the clutches as cell phone cases; as a result, I experimented with swapping out magnetic closures with velcro.
20 clutches later, I have learned a great deal. For one, the pattern calls for low-loft batting as a facing for 2 pattern piece, but that seems to reduce seem allowance on those pieces. I found that after every cut, after every ironing, after every seem, I had to measure, compare, trim.
These completed clutches are being sent to friends from Chicago, IL to Littleton, CO, and to Bangkok, Thailand. I appreciate those friends who have allowed me to make them my guinea pigs!

Thanks to my friends who supported my efforts to improve my sewing skills by allowing me to create pocket clutches for them!
These completed pocket clutches will soon be in the mail to Facebook friends. The project has allowed me to experiment with fabric color and print, contrasting thread, and various battings.

Scalloped bag
April 22 - 24, 2014
Saw a wonderful illustration in Italian of a scalloped bolso - but no instructions. I decided to try constructing something similar. Taking this one slowly and considering all options. Here are a few pics of my progress, but the bag is far from finished.
I had fat quarters of some lovely fabric, and I wanted to show it off to its best advantage.
After sewing a seam to create a canister-style base, I used muslin as a temporary round bottom -- just to see how the bag would look.
I cut out a heavy-weight interfacing and sewed a pretty fabric to it.

The lining of the bag will be an insert with drawstrings. I have been looking for a heavy-weight rope, but I suspect I will end up using fabric for drawstrings.
Please do check back for updates.
My Kaffe Fassett Bag
April 30 - May 3, 2014
Saw the pattern on Pinterest. This pattern is in Japanese, but the illustrations were clear. The simple design of the bag is sophisticated and understated, and the vivid fabric adds dimension. I had been looking for a fabric for a summer tote, thinking I might have to settle for whatever I could find locally. On a hunch I went to Etsy and found several shops selling the fabric by the yard. I ordered one yard. It arrived quickly.
